Patents protect ideas
If the important thing is how something works, then you should plan on applying for a patent. A patent gives broader protection than any other form of Intellectual Property Rights.
Protect the appearance of a product
If your product is purely functional, and not designed to be beautiful, then you are probably going to have to rely on Unregistered Design Right. If your product is designed to be bought because of its looks, then a Registered Design is possible, and gives more effective and longer protection than Unregistered Design Right.
Trade Mark Rights protect names and brands
If your product or service has a distinctive name or you use a memorable logo or other strapline (or even a jingle), then you should try to register that as a trade mark.
